"The Fiddler
was standing in a corner of the barn. He was a tall and stately farmer
from Ovanåker, taller than most of the wedding guests. He rested
the fiddle against his chin using a specially made chin-rest. His bowing
was a bit heavy, but the polska flowed from the fiddle with sparkling
rollicking cheerfulness - it danced out from the old man's hands.
"The
fiddler himself was in the music with his life and soul, and his face
was sometimes distorted in an ugly way in wild ecstasy, so most of the
guests preferred watching the old man's expression to taking part in the
dance. The children laughed at him, and the older ones giggled or smiled
from kind interest. All eyes were shining.
"But
the fiddler was not bothered. He played so that the sweat ran in torrents
from his forehead and down over the fiddle. All the time he beat the time,
so that the floor of the barn sagged.
"When
the dance was over, he straightened his back, wiped the sweat off his
brow with the back of his hand and said rather spitefully, while eyeing
the dancers critically: 'There were five pairs dancing, but only one who
followed the tune!'"
