Hurv KRCD-31: Twisted Tunes - from the playing of Snickar Erik Olson, master fiddle of Ovanåker, Hälsingland Ulf Störling & Roland Keijser
Hurv KRCD-30: Traditional Hymn-Singing from Gammalsvenskby - the old Swedish village in the Ukraine The Swedish island of Dagö, in the Baltic (Hiiumaa i today's Estonia), was lost to the Russians in 1710; in 1781, 1200 Swedes were deported to a region in the Ukraine. From then until their arrival in Sweden in 1929, the villagers struggled to retain their Swedish identity, their language, their history and their traditions, isolated from the rest of Swedish culture. This recording features the highly-ornamented folk hymn-singing of Anders Hoas and Maria Hoas, recorded in 1937, with repertoire from two local editions of the Swedish Hymn-book of 1695/97. Complete hymn texts.
Hurv KRCD-29: Marie Bengtsson - Claude Debussy Marie Bengtson received her soloist diploma in 1984. She has performed as a soloist, with chamber groups and as an accompanist in Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Marie says: "I am fascinated by Debussy's ability to use tones and sounds to paint the colours of nature and convey its moods registering all its nuances of varying light, the elusiveness and boundlessness of it all..." Although this is virtuoso music of the highest degree, the listener hardly notices it. The mood is very relaxing and the beauty of Debussy's music is striking. The recording is made with fine vintage valve microphones, contributing to a rarely soft and beautiful piano sound. Contents: Suite bergamasque, Arabesque No.1, Estampes and Nocturne.
Hurv KRCD-28: Historical Recordings of Swedish Folk Music V: Swedish Pastoral Music - The Magical Songs of the Forests Whereas KRCD-26 covered the diversity and richness of the music of one parish, the present record makes it possible to study both the simliarities and differences by getting to know herding calls from other parts of the country. The aim has been to include as many as possible of the oldest known recordings.
Hurv KRCD-27: Historical Recordings of Swedish Folk Music IV: Silverbasharpa 1 Sigurd Holmberg plays the silver-bass keyed-fiddle, the latest stage in the development of the 'simple' keyed-fiddle.
Hurv KRCD-26: Historical Recordings of Swedish Folk Music III: Pastoral music from Malung The pastoral music of Sweden is a unique tradition with ancient roots, yet was still in common use as an integral part of working life on many pastures in Dalarna in the 1950's and 60's. Typical of this music is the singing style called kulning, which is without words, and sung in a high register. This CD contains field recordings from Malung in west Dalarna, made in the 1960's and 70's, and they clearly transmit the magic of this music. Some of them are unique in that they are so long, and contain communication in kulning between two singers. There are also a few songs with words connected to herding, and tunes played on wooden whistle, cow's horn and fiddle.
Hurv KRCD-25:Historical Recordings of Swedish Folk Music II: Fiddle Tunes from Orsa II On this disc we hear Orsa fiddlers Gössa Anders Andersson, Gössa Anna Andersson, Gulis Erik Andersson, Henning Snitt, Elings Samuel Ersson and Anders Sandberg.
Hurv KRCD-24: Historical Recordings of Swedish Folk Music I: Fiddle Tunes from Orsa I Gössa Anders Andersson, Gössa Anna Andersson, Orsa Fiddlers' Ensemble If you ask Swedish folk musicians of today about major influences, one man who is often mentioned is Gössa Anders Andersson (1878-1963) from Orsa in Dalarna. Orsa has a strong and special fiddling tradition, and Gössa Anders was its foremost exponent. He paid great attention to rhythm, and his intonation was precise, including the many "blue notes". This recording is a remastering of a number of 78's recorded in 1950. Most of the tunes are played solo by Gössa Anders, but on eight tracks he is backed by his daughter Gössa Anna. Orsa Fiddlers' Ensemble, of which Gössa Anders was musical leader, is heard on four tunes. Altogether the best way to get to know the beautiful world of Orsa polskas.
Hurv KRCD-23: Dance Minuets 1731-1801 The two-part arrangements is from Swedish hand-written music collections from the 18th century. Ulf Störling and Anders Rosén, barouqe and early 19th-century violins. The arrangements are also available as sheet music, KRH-2.
Hurv KRCD-22: Gästrikelåtar och lite till (Gästrikland Tunes and more) Gunnar Persson is a melodeon player in the style made widely popular in Sweden by Carl Jularbo (1893-1966). On this long awaited recording he is joined by the accordionist Anders Larsson for a good mixture of solos and duets. The tunes are mostly dance tunes: the waltzes, polskas, hambos, polkas, schottisches and mazurkas so typical of the repertoire of the first half of this century. Gunnar is a true master of the melodeon, and plays slowly swaying waltzes as well as tunes with a more driving rhythm.
Hurv KRCD-21: Stockholm Clavier - Music on Swedish Clavichords Inger Grudin styles herself "claviaturist", and she is comfortable behind most historical keybord instruments. Here she plays original Swedish instruments of the 18th century.
